From November 1998 until 2016, my husband David and I owned a Collins Booksellers franchise in Mount Gambier.
Between us we ran the day to day operations until October 2011, when I left Mount Gambier for Adelaide and a position as Graduate of Architecture at Brown Falconer.
Collins Booksellers Mount Gambier is a general bookshop, catering to a wide range of readers with a smorgasbord of genres.
Although avid readers, and despite having worked independently previously, running a bookstore was a steep learning curve for us both and provided a wealth of experience in many areas, including:
Buying - selecting stock for local readers from the tens of thousands of books published in Australia each year
Selling / customer service - There are many, many opportunities to buy books in the world. A local bookshop in a regional (or any) area relies very much on the level of customer service it can offer
Financial management - debtors, creditors, payroll, etc.
HR - a small business is very dependent on excellent people. This is an unassailable truth.
