I prepared and submitted an Option C which profiled an alternative concept for the development, one that would serve the City in a community role. It was designed to be a meeting place for small and large civic or private events and celebrations, and inviting to people of all ages and abilities.
It would accommodate a range of activities, free for community use, and a substantial showing of local art in its many mediums by local artists and craftspeople, as well as space for performance art; plenty to do, plenty to see and plenty of places to sit!
It would be and feel safe, friendly and welcoming.
The existing railway station building would make an ideal venue for a cafe, retaining an historical link with its past use and providing an elevated vantage point to enjoy the view over the park.
The site could provide an ideal central location for a market place - a permanent venue for both regular and occasional markets.
Barbecue and eating areas, suitable for wet weather use as well as for the sunny days to maximise their use year round.
The plan was presented not as a definitive answer, but as a concept model for further discussion in the hope that the community would benefit from a vibrant and dynamic, central, outdoor meeting / sitting / walking / cycling / doing / playing space, accessible to all, residents and visitors alike.
